LGBT Television Picks 2.7.06
What's on The Telly Tonight?
"Inside the Actors Studio: Liza Minnelli" (she's not gay, but she'll marry one...)
8:00 p.m. ET - Bravo
Had they told me Liza made host James Lipton cry from the outset, I would have watched on Sunday when this program originally aired. Thankfully, I can catch this repeat tonight - and it's very TV worthy darlings, take my word for it. That Liza, she's a firecracker!
"The Advocate Newsmagazine"
8:00 p.m. ET - LOGO
The televised version of the popular homocentric magazine, this "issue" focuses on homophobia in hip-hop, gays in the military and basketball star Sheryl Swoopes. Entertaining? Doesn't look it. Informative? Probably. Pretentious? Just a tad.
"Secret Lives of Women: Late in Life Lesbians"
8:00 p.m. ET - WE
Check out three older lady lesbians who came out their golden years - they'll blow your mind and your preconceptions about Grannies, dude! (It's like the "Golden Girls," but without the high fashion and cheesecake references.
"Crumbs"
9:30 p.m. ET - ABC
Oh how I love the Martin Mull ("Rosanne") - no, really! Tonight he plays the role of an ever-so-naughty Ben Franklin impersonator - it's like they read my mind, how creepy! Anyhow, the lovable Mr. Mull becomes smitten with the crazy Suzanne (Jane Curtain) and much hilarity will ensue. Of course the big news is that they'll be taking a stroll down Gay Plot lane as Mitch (Fred Savage) meets a man (Ryder Strong) who refuses to date him unless he comes out to his family. (This isn't the first time the two have shared a sound stage - Savage and Strong worked together on "Boy Meets World" too.) You know, I've seen some *other* critics pan this show for Jane's over-the-top madness, but I say it's still the most inventive sitcom to be birthed in years...so up yours, "Crumb" detractors! Sure, it could be better, but it could be worse - you have watched "Rodney," haven't you?
"Queer Eye"
10:00 p.m. ET - Bravo
Keep Carson out of the monkey house! Tonight the Fab Five help out a Zookeeper looking to trap his woman using a tastefully appointed domicile as bait. Will there be poo-flinging? One can only hope!
"Love Monkey" - It tries to be gay vague, but comes off as just...gay.
10:00 p.m. ET - CBS
Tonight the creepy looking doll man Tom (Tom Cavanaugh) seeks a director for his new client's video. Christopher Wiehl plays his humpy gay friend, Jake, but don't expect Jake to do anything...he's just a desperate attempt to create gay eye candy. (Hint to the producers: you need to throw in a few gym scenes if you really want to grab my attention - have you seen MTV's "The Gauntlet II?" Hot like the sun!)
"The Man without a Face" - Should have been more gay...
10:15 p.m. ET - AMC
Mel Gibson plays a disfigured loner suspected in a child abuse case. In the original Isabelle Holland story, Mel's character is gay, but somehow (somehow) it got dropped from the script. That's a real shame as three more people might have seen this in the theater if they'd have kept the gayness in. (Of course that's a high-ball estimate.)
The gay thing was totally "the doll man" BTW great name for the dude seeing that he takes 20 minutes to do his hair - LMAO, anyway it was Tom Cavanaghs idea to have the gay dude in there.
